Separate study rights entitle the student to take a separate study module or certain courses without the right to complete a degree.

What is a separate study right?

Separate study rights entitle the student to take a separate study module or certain courses without the right to complete a degree. Faculties and the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) can grant separate study rights for such study units and modules that are not available as open university studies at JYU. Separate study rights are valid for a fixed period.

Students who study with a separate study right participate either in the same studies as degree students or complete the course independently, depending on the course completion method. Students who complete separate studies follow the same regulations as degree students.

Instructions

Applications for separate study rights are processed throughout the year without an application period. However, the application must be submitted well in advance, taking into account the holiday seasons, before the studies are scheduled to begin so that the faculty has time to make a decision before the start of the studies. The duration of a separate study right is typically 1-2 years. For justified reasons, the faculty may grant a separate study right for a shorter or longer period of time.

Movi does not grant separate study rights for language-specific communication and language studies offered by the Jyväskylä Open University. Communication and language courses intended for doctoral students or Jyväskylä University staff are also not covered by separate study rights. The granting of separate study rights is based on the resources of the department, the applicant’s justifications, and the applicant’s previous academic background and language skills.

Study right

Separate study rights for Movin study modules last for two years. For individual courses, the duration of separate study rights is determined on a course-by-course basis.
