Study Module in Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence

With the rapid increase of internationalism throughout the personal, corporate, and public spheres of societies, multilingual communication skills and intercultural awareness and competence are required more and more often at a level which presupposes active, creative and professionally-oriented participation in a variety of socio-cultural contexts both in the home country and abroad.

Study Module in Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence

Study Module in Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence is a module that offers degree students at the Ģ��ֱ�� the chance to invest in the development of their internationalization capabilities and demonstrate their competence. Module includes studies completed in the form of courses run by the Jyväskylä University's Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication Movi, courses from subject departments and as an exchange student, etc.

When a student has completed minimum 20 ECTS of different studies that support the internationalization process (s)he may apply the module from Movi.

Module goals and learning outcomes

With the rapid increase of internationalism throughout the personal, corporate, and public spheres of societies, communication in a foreign language and intercultural communication skills are required more and more often at a level of proficiency which presupposes active, creative and professionally-oriented use of the foreign language in a variety of socio-cultural contexts both in the home country and abroad.

The aims of the Study Module in Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence are

help students to understand and analyse the phenomena and skills linked to multilingual intercultural communication as part of their academic expertise
help students to analyse and verbalize the multilingual intercultural communication competence accumulated through exchanges and/or being international at home
give students the skills and competences to function flexibly in a multilingual and -cultural context.

On completion of the study module, the student is expected to

understand and appreciate the he multifariousness of languages and cultures
understand and recognize the phenomena linked to intercultural communication, multiculturalism and languages
be able to analyse their own beliefs and experiences and communicative behavior in intercultural contexts.
have developed their own language skills and multilingual repertoire.
be able to function in multilingual groups and situations by taking into consideration the various communicators and their backgrounds.

The study module consists of the following courses

Mandatory course : (3-5ECTS). The course can be completed at any point of the studies.
Courses from minimum two foreign languages: not the mandatory language courses belonging to the degree requirements or mother tongue. There must be minimum 10 ECTS of these foreign languages.

If the 20 ECTS minimum requirement is not met with the courses mentioned above, other courses can be included into the study module when these courses support the development of the aims and learning outcomes of the study module, like courses from mobility or international at home.

NB. Courses of the module cannot be part of any other module as well, i.e. courses belonging to you subject studies, communication and language studies, or other thematic modules or study units.

You can get credits and courses that you have completed abroad recognised into your Ģ��ֱ�� degree as compulsory or elective studies. If these studies can be seen to contribute to your intercultural competence, they can ban be included into the module. The process in Sisu: Recognition of prior learning

If you wish to have your studies abroad included in the module, you need to present the relevant course descriptions and learning outcomes in the application.

Courses from Movi

The module must include courses from minimum two foreign languages: not the mandatory language courses belonging to the degree requirements or mother tongue. There must be minimum 10 ECTS of these foreign languages. Movi also offers courses on multilingualism and intercultural communication: Communication and language course offering at Movi.

Courses from faculties and departments

These studies follow the curricula and syllabi of the faculties and subject departments and participation requires study rights in the subjects. The credits earned are, in principle, allocated to the subject departments, but if there are courses that clearly contribute to the development of multilingualism and intercultural competence they can also be included into the module

If you wish to include courses that promote internationalization you need to present the relevant course descriptions and learning outcomes in the application you need to justify in your application why you think that these courses would be suitable.

ECTS-awarded multilingual and intercultural competence acquired in other contexts

This refers to ECTS-awarded activities like international tutoring and other international activities or internships. If you wish to include courses like these, you need to present the relevant course descriptions and learning outcomes in the application you need to justify in your application why you think that these courses would be suitable.

Registering the module

After completing minimum 20 ECTS of these courses supporting multilingual and intercultural communication competence, the student can apply for the registration of module with a specific form.

Because courses cannot be part of two different study modules, please check before hand from your study coordinator than including courses into the Study Module in Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence does not cause any problems with the other study modules of the degree .
