Where to get a user account?

Due to security reasons user accounts/passwords will not be delivered by email or phone. There are several ways to deliver the user account:

  • Using Finnish online banking credentials at the service. This method is only applicable to students who have Finnish Social Security Number and Finnish online banking credentials with the verification of identity feature or mobile operator MobileID.
  • Identifying yourself electronically through the Signicat system, where you are required to show your passport or European identity card and live video of yourself, so that your identification can be automatically verified. You will receive a link to this service by e-mail. This identification method is recommended for international students who do not have Finnish SSN and Finnish online banking/MobileID.
  • By online video identification and by directly communicating and presenting your passport or the European identity card to the JYU staff. This method is targeted only at those who fail to identify themselves through the Signicat system mentioned above. You will receive instructions for the manual identification process if the Signicat identification process fails. Please note that the manual identification process is much more time-consuming and requires online meeting arrangements. The time zone differences can also present challenges. We strongly recommend that you activate your credentials as soon as possible.
  • By showing your passport or European identity card at the check-in desk during the orientation programme.
  • By showing your passport or European identity card at the Service Desk of the Digital Services.

Once you have received your account credentials in one of the ways mentioned above, please .

You should activate your user account before your studies begin, as you will need your user account as soon as you begin your studies.

Before you can activate the user account, your information must be in the JYU student register. If you are unable to activate your user account by authenticating with Finnish netbank account credentials, it is likely that your information is not yet available in the student register.

Make sure to keep your information up to date in the OMA service throughout your studies.

Multifactor authentication in Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) requires the users to identify themselves by more than a username and password. In practice this means that after entering your username and password, the login is further verified with the smartphone application (Authenticator) you have linked to the service. It is the same principle as used for online banking. By enabling MFA, you protect your account from unauthorized access and ensure that your information does not fall into the wrong hands.

The Microsoft/M365 MFA solution has been deployed for staff logins to Microsoft services such as Outlook email and Teams, as well as services linked to Microsoft logins such as the Eduhouse e-learning portal.

Other user groups (e.g. students) will migrate to multi-factor authentication for Microsoft services and services that use Microsoft login in a phased approach.

Cisco's DUO MFA solution has been used for targeted authentication of Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ staff for several years for services such as: system maintenance VPN connections, Nextcloud and Sarake-sign.

We will provide more details and guidance on these extensions to the deployment of multi-factor authentication at a later stage.

Instructions and further information

In HelpJYU, you will find detailed setup instructions and screenshots:

In the OMA service, you will find general information on the implementation of MFA services and in the future also on the reset of authentication applications (Authenticator), for example, in case of change or loss of terminal device:

If you have any questions or concerns about using multi-factor authentication, please contact Digital Services using .

University email address

The University's main communication channel is email. The University provides students with an email address to receive and send emails from the University address. You can identify the University's email addresses in the students' (at)student.jyu.fi and staff's (at)jyu.fi attachment. Digital Services recommends that you activate your student email in the OMA service to ensure that your student email traffic is relevant to your studies.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ student newsletter JYUSletter is sent twice a month to all students. The newsletter contains current news and events. All student news is published on the Student page and the MyJYU app, and you can also keep up to date by following the university's social media: @uniofjyvaskyla can be found on Instagram, Facebook and X, for example.

The faculties also have their own email lists for targeted communication with students. The course organisers post information about courses and, for example, exam timetables, via the course email list. It is therefore important to keep track of the university's email communication. It is also a way of contacting course leaders and tutors if you have a question. Contact with Student Services is made via the HelpJYU portal.

Sisu

At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, your own personal study plan HOPS is created in the Sisu system. Registration for courses is also done through Sisu. New students do not need to create their own study plan before the orientation week, but it may be useful to familiarise themselves with the system before starting their studies. New students have their own Sisu guide with detailed instructions on how to create a study plan and enrol in courses.

Please note that Sisu access is only activated once the right to study has officially started.

Microsoft 365 for students

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ offers students the opportunity to activate Microsoft 365 office applications for free. With Microsoft 365, you get the latest Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, etc.) completely free of charge for up to five of your own devices, as well as cloud versions of these applications, which allow you to work on documents directly through your web browser. Students also have access to storage space on OneDrive. Microsoft 365 will not be available after the end of the study right.

Computer labs for students

Each campus has computer labs where you can find the software you need to study. You can go to the computer labs to study in peace and quiet when there are no classes. The number of computers currently available can be conveniently viewed in the map view of the MyJYU application.

Printing at university

Even though more and more of their studies are done online, students still encounter situations where they need to print. You can print, copy and scan documents on the university's multifunctional devices. To print, you need an activated Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ user account.

Printers are available on all campuses.

Each undergraduate student receives a printing, copying and scanning credit of €7 per semester. This is enough for a student's basic use, but if you print a lot, you can buy more.
