Scholarship programme from 2024 onwards
When applying for a study place, applicants liable to pay tuition fees may simultaneously apply for scholarships offered at JYU. The scholarship cannot be applied for at a later stage during studies. Starting in 2024, the following scholarship is available for application in each English-taught master's degree programme:
The JYU Scholarship, which covers 50% of the tuition fee. This is a university-level scholarship awarded by the JYU rector’s decision to all eligible admitted applicants who applied for the scholarship.
- The right to the scholarship will be lost if a student doesn’t start their studies in the same year they are admitted.
- The scholarship is conditionally granted for the target degree completion time (3 years for bachelor’s degree studies; 2 years for master’s degree studies).
- To receive the scholarship for the following year, a student must make sufficient progress in their studies (i.e., complete a minimum of 55 ECTS credits during the previous year).
Students admitted to the Bachelor of Business Innovation and Sustainability programme who complete it within three academic years will be granted the JYU Scholarship for their master’s studies as well.
U.S. nationals can apply for Fulbright-Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Graduate Award, which covers 100% of the tuition fee for two years and includes a living expenses grant. To receive the Fulbright award for the second year, students must make sufficient progress in their studies (i.e., complete a minimum of 55 ECTS credits during their first year). One Fulbright Award is available each year, and there is a separate application procedure.
During admission round 2024, JYU was also awarding:
- Finland scholarship, covering 100% of tuition fee and including 5000 EUR relocation grant to the most talented, academically excellent applicant in each programme. Finland Scholarship was awarded by JYU as a part of the Finland Scholarship programme, which ended in 2024.
- Scholarships on humanitarian grounds that cover 100% of the tuition fee to students who have received and who have been selected for English-taught master's degree programmes.
Terms and Conditions
The first year of studies
The scholarship is personal and cannot be transferred to another student. The scholarship cannot be applied for at a later stage during studies. JYU Scholarship is not paid to the recipient’s account, instead, the University deducts 50% from the tuition fee sum.
The right to the scholarship will be lost if a student doesn’t start their studies in the same year they are admitted. Postponing the scholarship is only possible over the academic years or semesters during which the student is formally registered for non-attendance. Please note, that for the first year of studies, registering for non-attendance is possible for three reasons only, as stated in the Universities Act (personal illness, childbirth, Finnish compulsory military service).
Registration of 1st year students
The second year of studies
The scholarship will be granted for the second year only in case the student makes sufficient progress in their studies during the first year. To receive the scholarship for the second academic year, the student must complete at least 55 ECTS credits of degree studies during the first academic year. The credits need to be entered in the JYU study register by the end of the academic year (31 July). After completing 55 credits, the scholarship-recipient should fill in the , so we can enter the information that the student has received the scholarship for the second academic year into the system. Only after this, the student can register for attendance for the second academic year. If the student does not have 55 ECTS credits in the JYU study register by the end of the academic year, they are no longer entitled to the scholarship and must pay the tuition fee for the rest of their studies.
Registration of continuing Master's degree students
Upon a separate consideration, scholarship for the second academic year can be granted to students who have not completed 55 ECTS credits during the first academic year due to the following reasons:
- health-related issues that have affected student’s ability to study (a medical certificate is needed);
- an illness or death of their close relative (a certificate is needed);
- delays in studies related to obtaining a residence permit (documents proving the dates of submitting an application and receiving a decision from Migri are needed);
- other compelling reasons.
A student facing such a situation must inform JYU without delay by filling in the .
If the student completes the degree faster than in two years, the right to the scholarship expires upon the completion of the degree.
In case your studies are delayed
If the student’s studies are delayed, the rule is that the scholarship is not granted for longer than two academic years. However, a separate consideration is possible if the delay is caused by issues in the student’s health or an illness or death of their close relative or obtaining a residence permit, or other compelling reasons. Upon a separate consideration, a scholarship may be granted for the fifth semester for the purpose of completing the master’s thesis, if studies have progressed in compliance with the approved personal study plan, and if the thesis has been started and has progressed (a statement from the thesis supervisor is needed). JYU organizes an application round for the fifth-semester scholarship in late spring. Students will be informed about the application process via email.
