Registration of continuing bachelor's and master's degree students

All bachelor's and master's degree students must register for attendance or non-attendance each academic year.

Principles for registration

Each student pursuing a degree must formally register for attendance or non-attendance each academic year. You must register for all of your active degree study rights.

Register for attendance if you plan to participate in teaching, complete studies or a degree and receive student financial aid. Register for non-attendance if you will not complete any studies during the academic year or term. A non-attending student remains enrolled at the university, but cannot complete any studies, does not pay the student union membership fee, and is not eligible for student benefits or scholarships.

If you are obliged to pay a tuition fee, it must be paid before registering for attendance for the following academic year or term. The tuition fee is not collected for the terms for which you have registered for non-attendance. The students who have received a scholarship to cover the tuition fee cannot register for the second year of studies before completing at least 55 ECTS credits during their first year of studies (during the first year when the student has registered for attendance).

Registration of students liable to pay tuition fees

You cannot register for terms after the calculated completion time of studies. If your study time has ended or is about to end, you may register only after you have been granted an extension to your study time.

The registration period is from 1 April until 31 July annually. Registration takes place online in . If you register for attendance, you will be directed to pay the student union membership fee as an online payment. When registering for non-attendance, you do not pay the membership fee.

Before registering, please check in the whether your social security number on the page is the same as your official Finnish personal identity code. If not, please ask the Student Service Desk on to enter the correct code to the student register. You can register on OILI within 1-3 days after your Finnish personal identity code has been updated.

Paying the student union membership fee as a bank transfer

If you do not have a Finnish personal identity code, you cannot use the OILI service to register. Instead, you can register for attendance by paying the student union membership fee as a bank transfer. After paying the fee, you must submit a receipt of the payment to the Student Service Desk for registration.

After you have paid the fee, please send a copy of the receipt either on or as a paper copy to the following address: Student Service Desk, P.O. Box 35 (T), FI-40014 Ģ��ֱ��, Finland.

After the first year of studies, you can register for non-attendance also without a statutory reason. When you register for non-attendance, you do not pay the student union membership fee. As a non-attending student, you cannot complete any studies or apply for a degree and you are not entitled to the benefits of the student card. Each bachelor's and master's student has a permissible period of absence of two terms (one academic year), which means that your study time will not be consumed if you register as non-attending for no more than two terms. After using the permissible period of absence, your study time will be consumed even if you register for non-attendance.

Statutory absence

Absence for a legal reason (parental leave or compulsory/voluntary military service) does not count against your study time for the terms in which the legal reason for the absence falls. A statutory absence is registered at the Student Service Desk when you have registered for non-attendance for the terms to which the statutory absence applies and provided us with a document stating the statutory reason. The document can be, for example, a decision on parental leave by Kela or a conscription order for the military service. The document must state the student's personal information and the time period of the statutory reason.

To be eligible for a statutory absence, you must register for non-attendance for the terms in question and have study time left. A statutory absence cannot be registered if you have already been granted an extension to your original study time. The extended study time will be consumed regardless of whether you are registered as attending or non-attending. In this case, you must apply for a new extension from your faculty.

To report a statutory absence:

Register for non-attendance for the terms to which the statutory absence applies. The registration period is 1 April to 31 July each year.
Contact the Student Service Desk using the form on HelpJYU and indicate that you have a statutory reason for absence.
Please do not send the document related to the statutory reason via HelpJYU! We will send you instructions on how to submit the document by confidential email after you have contacted us.
Once your document has been received, you will be notified that the statutory absence has been registered for the terms in question.

Non-attendance to attendance: If you are not liable to pay tuition fees and you wish to change your registration from non-attendance to attendance, you can make the change in the from 1 August to 31 March. At other times, you can change the registration by paying the student union membership fee as a bank transfer and sending the receipt of the payment to the Student Service Desk . You do not need to pay the re-registration fee when changing the registration. The re-registration fee will not be refunded if you pay it by mistake.

If you are liable to pay tuition fees, please contact the International Office at degree-students@jyu.fi if you wish to change your registration to attendance.

Registration can be cancelled during the registration period. Cancelling registration after the registration period is possible only if the student is obliged to pay a tuition fee but does not get a residence permit to Finland or the permit is significantly delayed. Those who have cancelled their registration are treated similar to those who have failed to register.

Attendance to non-attendance: If you have already registered for attendance but wish to change it to non-attendance, you may do so by notifying the Student Service Desk by 31 July regarding the autumn term and by 31 December regarding the spring term.

You must pay the student healthcare fee if you are studying for a higher education degree and have registered as attending for the current term. The healthcare fee covers medical care and mental health services as well as oral health services from the Finnish Student Health Services (). You must pay the fee even if you use occupational or other health services instead of the FSHS.

You are not billed for the student healthcare fee but must make sure to pay it in OmaKela for each academic term. .

If you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee, but you must still contact Kela. However, you can use the FSHS’s services. .

You can get a sticker for your student card from at the beginning of the academic year. If you use a digital student card, the validity of your card is extended automatically after registration for attendance.

The sticker from the previous academic year is valid until end of September at VR and Matkahuolto and in the student restaurants.
