The national task of the FIER includes investigating, assessing, and developing the Finnish educational system and school culture. Its research covers the entire educational system, from pre-school to higher education, and the links between vocational and academic education and working life. Co-operation with schools, educational administrators, workplaces, policy-makers, and the media is a key element in its operational strategy, which aims at increasing the effectiveness of research findings.
Publications are an essential aspect of the FIER’s activities, research process, and research collaboration. During its existence, the FIER has published over a thousand books and serial publications. Current FIER publications comprise three scientific series, research-based books, the Finnish Journal of Education Kasvatus, and the Finnish Journal of University Pedagogy.
FIER as a publisher
Researcher training is a key part of the research institute's operations. Each year, the professors and researchers of the institute supervise more than 30 doctoral students at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, in addition to which doctoral students from Finnish and foreign universities can also be supervised.
Doctoral Education

The strategy of the Finnish Institute of Educational Research (FIER) is in line with that of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ (JYU). The Institute shares JYU's mission to be an effective university of higher education and supports the goal of being a strong, effective and attractive research university. Research at the FIER has been organized into four main areas in research teams.
The Institute board’s role is to develop and evaluate the operations of the Institute. The Management group is the unofficial body assisting the head of the institute with its management.
