Traineeships help with recruitment

A motivated and skilled employee is of paramount importance to an employer. Recruiting and onboarding a new employee can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive process. A new employee may be an existing trainee whose attitude and skills have already been tested during the traineeship. At its best, an internship provides an additional resource to carry out a planned project or development project, to carry out various surveys and inquiries, to gain new ideas and know-how for the company, and the latest information on the content and quality of university education.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is part of the FORTHEM Alliance. Companies in the alliance's regions can offer internships to students from nine alliance universities. Find out more: forthem@jyu.fi

Duration and pay

A university student's work placement is an average period of three months in a company, community or public administration organisation. The trainee's salary is fully or partially financed by the employer, depending on whether the trainee has been awarded a traineeship grant. Most departments have an annual amount set by the faculty in their budget (for students who are not studying to become subject teachers). This allowance is intended to support students' placements both at home and abroad.

Internships may also sometimes be unpaid if the work is relevant to the student's field of study. However, as a matter of priority, the employment services recommend that the trainee be paid at least a salary that meets the Kela employment condition.

Contracts

Students of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ have the possibility to include work placements as part of their studies. In this case, the trainee's work tasks must be in line with their education. The trainee must have a supervisor appointed at the workplace. The relevant departments are responsible for the internship and the internship always requires the approval of the department concerned.

If the employer receives a traineeship grant from the institution, a traineeship agreement is concluded between the employer and the institution concerned. In addition, a fixed-term employment contract is drawn up with the trainee. The contract will be in writing and will specify at least the duration of the traineeship, the daily working hours, the salary and the period of payment. The trainee is always employed by the employer, not by the university. The trainee is subject to the collective agreement to which the employer placement site is bound. The trainee will work the same hours as other people doing similar work in the same work unit.

Schedule

Internships can be offered to students at any time of the year, provided that they are fully paid by the employer. Decisions on placement grants are usually taken by the institutions between January and March and in practice the majority of placements are usually carried out in the summer months. Offers of traineeships should preferably be received before the end of the year.

The practical arrangements at departmental level are made by specially designated traineeship liaison officers. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s Employment Services will also be happy to answer general questions about internships.
