Master's Degree Programme in Music and Science

Music’s role in society is evolving. Thanks to streaming services and social media, music is consumed at a higher rate and with more individual freedom than ever before. Meanwhile, the health and wellbeing sector highlights music’s potential as a powerful therapeutic and salutogenic tool. To help make sense of these recent developments, the Master's Degree Programme in Music and Science at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ teaches students to understand the various functions of music in modern everyday life, by examining music through a cognitive, psychological and societal lens.

Our two-year interdisciplinary graduate programme, led by a world-class team of music cognition, psychology, and therapy researchers, equips you with strong research skills and proficiency in cutting-edge technologies available at our state-of-the-art facilities.

Courses encompass a wide range of Music and Science topics, exploring theoretical frameworks, contemporary research methods, and practical applications. You'll delve into music research focusing on emotions, embodiment, creativity, and music therapy, gaining insight into cognitive, psychological and societal aspects of music’s role in contemporary life, while mastering qualitative and quantitative research methods. These practical, transferable skills culminate in preparing you for writing your Master’s thesis. Graduates of Music and Science are well-prepared for exciting careers in the broader music, arts, and culture sector, and the programme also paves the way for further doctoral studies.

With multiple projects awarded by the Research Council of Finland and the European Research Council, the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has earned worldwide recognition for its high level interdisciplinary music research.

Applications for master's degree programmes can be submitted once a year in January.

The Masters of Arts in Music and Science is a 120 ECTS credit programme requiring 2 years of full-time study. The programme blends comprehensive research with opportunities for practical experience in the professional world.

Organized by the Department of Music, Art, and Culture Studies, this programme is part of a large, international, and multidisciplinary unit. It's closely affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body, and Brain, which explores music's multifaceted role in human experiences across the lifespan and in health and disease. The programme is also appropriate to students with practical training as music therapists, who would like to develop competence in research methodologies.

How and when to apply?

  • The application period is in January 2026.
  • You can apply by submitting an online application form. This form is available in the Studyinfo.fi portal during the application period.
  • To apply successfully, you need to have suitable educational background and show proof of your English skills as mentioned in the admission criteria.
  • Applicants also need to submit the required attachments mentioned in the programme-specific admission criteria and on the application form.
  • Students from non-EU/EEA countries are liable to pay a tuition fee. We offer a tuition fee scholarship for students liable to pay tuition fees.

Student profile

We accept applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds including musicology, music education, arts and culture, information technology, or health and well-being. 

As a Music and Science student, you will meet and network with students from different countries, disciplines and backgrounds. This is facilitated by our bilingual approach to teaching, combining English and Finnish languages. 

Through group or pair work, discussions, presentations, and independent work in a multilingual environment, we enable our students to develop various sets of skills needed for professional life. 

Our unique programme is the first officially bilingual programme at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Integrating international and native Finnish speakers, our courses are run in Finnish and English.

Career opportunities for MuSci graduates

By the end of your studies, you will have earned strong skills in reading, assessing and producing research. Additionally, with our state of the art facilities, you will have developed a unique set of practical skills in technologies such as optical motion capture, EEG and digital audio.

Our alumni go on to work in a range of research, technical, administrative and other senior positions in the music and cultural sectors. Typical employers include festivals, music schools, universities and research units, music libraries, orchestras, organizations, music industry and media. Many of our alumni have gone on to doctoral training, leading to exciting careers in academia.
