Although moving to Finland was not something I initially imagined for myself, this decision has proven to be one of the most transformative of my life. My name is Fruzsi and I am currently pursuing my studies in the Music and Science Master’s Degree Programme at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.
Music has always been the focal point of my life, which led me to study music and performance in the UK for my bachelor's degree. I mainly focused on creating, writing and performing music. Still, eventually, I became curious about the “behind-the-scenes" science of it all. At the time, it was just an idea, and I wasn't sure if I could pursue it as a career.
New opportunities in music research
After completing my bachelor's studies, I took some time to work full-time and figure out my next step. I knew I wanted to continue my studies in music but was unsure about the direction to take. I started researching master's programmes related to music in Europe. I came across a degree programme previously offered at JYU: Music, Mind, and Technology. The programme offered various research opportunities in music research, and it genuinely excited me. Even though that programme is no longer active, I was happy to learn that a new one was opened under the name Music and Science.
The Music and Science programme has offered even more opportunities in music research than before. I also discovered that the Music department is part of the Center of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain which is a multidisciplinary research center renowned for its pioneering in the music research field. It really seemed like the perfect place to be!
The inspiring Musica experience
Being part of the first bilingual programme at the university was an exciting but challenging experience. Incorporating international students into the well-oiled machine of Musica was a new adventure for everyone, but it proved to be a success. Naturally, it posed some challenges — there were moments when the language barrier became evident. However, it allowed for rich cultural exchange. I found myself learning Finnish phrases during my group projects and discussions while also sharing my experiences with international classmates.
The low hierarchy between teachers and students also brought a refreshing change to my studies. Everyone in Musica is approachable and passionate about what they do, a truly inspiring atmosphere. With all the different research projects, conferences, orchestras, choirs and other events, students have the chance to join all kinds of activities related to music and strengthen their bonds with each other, which is one of the greatest parts of this experience. For example, in my first year, I learned the ins and outs of podcast production and took on the role of artistic producer for Musica Rock, a charity music festival entirely organized by students in my department. I also started my research journey.
Musica building (in collaboration with the Finnish Music Campus) has amazing resources, such as a Motion Capture Lab, Music Therapy Lab with clinical equipment and fully equipped music studios.
Unique adventures in Jyväskylä
Although my life centers around music, I’ve been lucky enough to get involved and dive into many other experiences, from tutoring and getting to know Finnish culture to exploring the natural wonders of Jyväskylä to trying out new sports. Plunging into icy water after sauna at -20°C and walking over a frozen lake for the first time were truly thrilling!
JYU and Jyväskylä have amazing opportunities waiting for you! Join us for your next adventure!
