The aim of the doctoral training is to educate professionals in research, who are competent and versatile experts in various fields for the needs of society. The professional expertise of a graduate develops during doctoral training as a result of conducting research, attending training events and acting as a member of the university and scientific community.

A doctorate in mathematics or statistics

• has demonstrated a thorough knowledge of his or her field of research
• has the ability to apply independently and critically the methods of scientific research
• is able to identify, follow and assimilate the latest international research in their field
• is able to generate new knowledge independently
• is able to communicate clearly and understandably about his/her field and research
• has the ability to work in demanding expert and development roles and in international collaboration
• acts ethically and promotes scientific transparency
• has national and international networks.

In the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Statistics you can specialize in mathematics or statistics. The specialisation is chosen at the time of application.

For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the student needs to produce an article dissertation, or a monograph dissertation, and complete doctoral studies in the extent of at least 50 ECTS. These include:

What can I study - teaching schedules for doctoral studies

A dissertation is a comprehensive, research-based scientific presentation in the doctoral candidate’s field of study. It represents the candidate’s ability to independently and critically apply the methods of scientific research and create new scientific knowledge. A dissertation can take the form of an article-based dissertation or a monograph. The content and subject of the dissertation are limited so that it is possible for students to complete the dissertation in three to four years when studying full-time.

At our department, we train high-level experts in mathematics and statistics who are employed both domestically and internationally. Doctoral training is based on research conducted in international research groups led by top researchers. Each doctoral researcher works as part of a research team and is part of the academic research community.

Our research is scientifically impressive and internationally valued. We belong to significant concentrations of mathematical research both in Finland and abroad. Our organization has ranked as one of the top mathematical institutions in Finland in international comparisons, such as Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, and our researchers have received internationally significant research funding. Our department is a member in several centre of excellence units of research co-operating with other universities.
