Research at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The main research areas at the department are geometry and analysis, probability and statistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is involved in two Finnish Centre of Excellence of the Academy of Finland and one Flagships of the Academy of Finland.

The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems

The Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures

The Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling

The Department belongs to significant concentrations of mathematical research both in Finland and abroad. Researchers of the department have obtained European Research Council (ERC) and Research Council of Finland (formerly: Academy of Finland) grants. Strengths in mathematics research are mathematical analysis and its applications in the study of inverse problems. Mathematical analysis has a long tradition in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and it is one of the five core research areas of the JYU Faculty of Mathematics and Science. Statistics strengthens the quantitative approach to research in the humanities as well.
