The aim of doctoral education is to prepare the student for a research career or for a career in other demanding expert and development positions and international cooperation. The core learning outcomes include thorough knowledge in the field of research, ethical responsibility, readiness to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and to produce new scientific knowledge, as well as to have versatile communication, interaction and cooperation skills.

At the JSBE there are two doctoral programmes

• Doctoral Programme in Business Studies, and
• Doctoral Programme in Economics.

In the Doctoral Programme in Business Studies, your specialisation may be

• accounting and corporate finance,
• corporate communication,
• corporate environmental management,
• management and leadership,
• marketing, or
• strategy and entrepreneurship.

To be awarded a doctorate, the student must complete the required doctoral studies, demonstrate independent and critical thinking in the field of research and write a doctoral dissertation and defend it in public.

The scope of a doctoral dissertation is limited so that it is possible to complete a doctoral degree within three to four years of full-time study. Doctoral studies can also be pursued on a part-time basis.

In addition to the doctoral dissertation, in the Doctoral Programme in Business Studies the doctoral student is required to take postgraduate studies according to the curriculum. The studies include discipline-specific studies and transferable skills studies.

A doctoral dissertation is a research-based, solid scientific presentation from the doctoral student’s field of study. It represents the student’s ability to independently and critically apply the methods of scientific research and create new scientific information. A dissertation must: 1) include new scientific information and justified results as well as be scientifically convincing, 2) demonstrate the student’s critical thinking, profound knowledge of the research field, command of scientific research methods and ability to apply them, and 3) be scientifically honest and follow the norms of research integrity.

The formats of a dissertation are article dissertation, essay-based dissertation, and monograph. An article-based dissertation consists of articles which discuss the same set of problems and a summarising report of the articles written by the doctoral student. An essay-based dissertation corresponds in form and requirements to an article-based dissertation and consists of unpublished scientific manuscripts and a summarising report. A monograph dissertation is based on independent scientific research and has not been published in this format before.

The extent of a dissertation should be designed so that the doctoral degree can be completed in three to four years when studying full time.
