Attachments
The required application attachments are listed below. Some attachments may be optional or required only from a certain group of applicants. Any documents not listed below will not be considered in the evaluation process.
If any compulsory attachments have not been submitted according to our instructions or in time to meet the given deadline(s), your application will be deemed ineligible and not processed further. The detailed instructions for attachments will be published on the University’s website before the application period opens. The instructions may change between application rounds, and you must make sure to comply with the requirements for the correct round.
1. Copy of an official transcript of records/mark sheet of a higher education degree
A transcript of records or mark sheet is a list of courses and study attainments that a student has completed at an educational institution.
2. Official translation of the transcript into English, Finnish, or Swedish (if needed)
If the official transcript of records is issued in a language other than English, Finnish, or Swedish, an official translation into one of these languages is required in addition to the original language version.
3. Copy of a degree certificate of a higher education degree
If the degree used for proving your eligibility is unfinished at the time of application, a degree certificate is not required in the application phase.
4. Official translation of the degree certificate into English, Finnish, or Swedish (if needed)
If the degree certificate is issued in a language other than English, Finnish, or Swedish, an official translation into one of these languages is required in addition to the original language version.
5. Proof of English language proficiency
You can prove your English skills only in one of the ways listed under the section Eligibility criteria. The required document is either a language test certificate or an educational document depending on the chosen method.

6. Copy of a valid passport (if needed)
A copy of the identification pages of a valid passport with the applicant’s name, date of birth, and nationality. In case the applicant does not hold a valid passport, another official identification document (such as a personal identity card or driving license) stating the same information is accepted. A copy of a passport is not required from citizens of Finland since their nationality is verifiable from a national database.
7. Copy of a residence permit card (if applicable)
A copy of both sides of the residence permit card. The document is required only if you, the applicant, hold one of the following: a valid residence permit in Finland of type A (that is not based on studies), P, P-EU, EU Blue Card, or a certificate of the permanent right of residence of a UK citizen in Finland, or residence card for a family member of an EU or UK citizen residing in Finland.
8.Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A curriculum vitae is a document that provides information about the applicant's educational and work history, skills and competencies. The curriculum vitae must be written in English.
9. Motivation letter
Clearly articulate your reasons for applying for the MSc Artificial Intelligence programme by answering the following questions.
- Describe your background relevant to the content of the AI programme.
- What motivates and interests you in the content of the programme and why?
- What are your future professional plans? What skills and knowledge do you expect to gain from this programme for your future career?
The maximum length of the motivation letter is one page (A4 size) using Times New Roman and font size 12 pt. The motivation letter must be written in English.
10. Introduction video
Technical requirements for the video. Technical instructions for the video:
- The length of the motivation video must be 5-7 minutes
- The file must not exceed 0.5 GB in size
- Format of the video must be either mp4 or mov
- Your face must always be recognizable on the video
- Audio quality must be high enough so that your speech is comprehensible
- Name the video in the format of your Surname_Firstname_AI_Video
- The language of the video must be English.
Guidelines for the introduction video
Prepare the "script" of the introduction video in advance, e.g. as a list of keywords. Use the list of questions below to plan the content of the video and ensure that you answer all the questions.
Articulate clearly your reasons for applying to the AI Master's Degree programme offered by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ by answering the following questions:
- Introduce yourself: your full name and the short name you use in your everyday life
- Motivation and awareness. Please, explain the following:
- why you have chosen to study AI
- why this programme and the university are your preferred choice, highlight few specific features from the programme that attracted you
- how you see your professional career with the AI degree
- confirm your awareness regarding the living costs in Finland and JYU tuition fees
- Relevant background and experience. Please describe the following:
- your relevant AI knowledge and skills
- any experience, projects, activities you have had involving AI
- Introduce your mathematical background, show that you are ready to complete advanced math-related courses
- Introduce your programming skills and name the skills you think will help you to complete our programme
- What kind of challenges do you anticipate facing while studying at JYU and how are you planning to overcome those?
The introduction video will be treated confidentially, and no information will be given to outsiders. That is why we hope that you answer all questions as openly as possible.
11. Other relevant certificates of the required skills in AI, programming, data science, mathematics and theoretical computer science, if applicable (optional)
If an applicant has acquired the above-mentioned skills and knowledge outside the formal degree used to prove eligibility to the programme (e.g. separate studies, MOOCs, professional training courses etc.), relevant certification must be provided. If these are included in the transcript of records provided to prove the eligibility for the programme, no further certification is required or processed. If the certification is in a language other than English, Finnish, or Swedish, an official translation to one of these languages as well as a copy of the original document are required.
