After I completed my bachelor'sdegree in Sports Science in Spain, I knew I wanted to pursue my master'sdegreeabroad to strengthennot just my professional, butalso my personal competencies. The top-level of research and thehighquality of teachingwere my principalmotivations for choosingthe Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.
I am Verónica, a second-year master student in Biology of Physical Activity at JYU. Being born in Argentina but living most of my life in Spain made me appreciate the importance of multiculturalism and a global mindset. Since I was little, I was always enthusiastic about the possibility of learning from different international experiences, such as living and studying abroad. This led me to study in Germany through the Erasmus Programme during my undergraduate studies in Sports Science.
However, when studying abroad, not everything is about academic life. I found particularly interesting the possibility of learning from a culture very different from mine. At the same time, spending time in nature and practicing sports are important pillars of my life. I was impressed to find out that Jyväskylä is not just surrounded by amazing nature but is also considered the sports capital of Finland, being a very physically active city, full of sport events.
World-class learning opportunities in a globally recognized programme
Since I commenced my studies at JYU I have been amazed by the great opportunities this programme is giving me. Enrolling in world-class research courses, taking part in extensive research projects, attending internationally recognized conferences, learning from renowned professors and visiting scholars are just a few of the benefits of studying in this globally recognized programme.
Before I came to Jyväskylä, I knew I was coming to one of the world’s leading universities for sport science, and yet this experience is exceeding my expectations. The learning environment is really supportive, feeling engaged and challenged by inspiring and approachable professors.
The lively city of Jyväskylä – Associations and events connecting you to the community
Besides my academic life, I was looking forward to a place that could offer diverse and new experiences and activities to enjoy my leisure time. In this sense, Jyväskylä is a lively city, where the student community is highly committed to student life. There are plenty of associations and events for international students, which will make you feel connected not just to the student community but also to this city.
At the same time, Jyväskylä is a very convenient city, its mid-size makes everything feel close and you will find yourself embraced by both the Finnish and international community. I feel Jyväskylä has the best of a small and big city at the same time.
I was a bit scared of the cold winters, however, the sauna culture and snowy natural landscapes taught me how to really enjoy the Finnish winter. Hiking in the most scenic Finnish natural parks, skating in the frozen lake, or cheering for the local ice hockey team at the stadium makes my experience in Finland a very special one.
Don’t be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone
At JYU I have felt supported by the different professors and staff members that are guiding me through my whole stay in Jyväskylä. The international student community makes you feel welcome and brings me nice plans in the city.
Lastly, studying at this well-recognized university is helping me to develop valuable competencies for my future career. I encourage you to broaden your horizon at JYU while enjoying the best of Finnish culture.
