JYU.INTEGRA – Sumeyra Bicer’s path to academic growth and a continued teaching career in Finland

Sumeyra Bicer comes originally from Turkey, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature. She worked for ten years as an English teacher until 2019 when life brought her to Finland. She wanted to continue working in her profession also here but learnt that, by law, she must hold a master’s degree in order to work as a teacher in Finland.

Sumeyra’s dream of teaching remained clear in her mind and led her back to a classroom

I’ve always been passionate about education and languages in particular, so I knew I couldn’t be happy in any other occupation. That’s why I never gave up my goal to continue as a teacher in Finland.

I received an official decision from the Finnish National Agency for Education about the equivalence of my degree and studies, based on which I needed to complete necessary qualifying studies to be able to work as a teacher again.

This goal motivated me to search for a training programme that would help me return to the teaching profession. The solution I found was the JYU.INTEGRA programme at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

More than a language course: a path towards master’s level studies and cultural understanding

I was looking for training that would support me academically and help me familiarise myself with Finnish culture and the education system. JYU.INTEGRA proved an excellent choice.

In JYU.INTEGRA I received tuition that exceeded all my expectations. It was a well-rounded academic language training programme of high quality, which not only developed my language skills, but also offered me an opportunity to attend study units in my own field. This was really important because when going through the study units I got a grasp of their content and also the opportunity to learn professional vocabulary from my own field.

JYU.INTEGRA gave me prerequisites for moving on to master’s level studies and thus for reaching my ultimate goal. At present, I’m studying in a master’s degree programme for language subject teachers at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, and I feel the previous training prepared me well for these studies.

JYU.INTEGRA’s long-standing support

"Our teachers always gave us the feeling that they believed in us and also encouraged us. They helped me gain self-confidence as I was advancing towards the goal I had set."

The support from this training has continued after graduation as well. JYU.INTEGRA teachers have remained present and kindly offered guidance after the training period.

Although two years have already passed since my JYU.INTEGRA studies, I’m still in touch with the teachers. I have received support and guidance from them at the registration stage of the master’s level studies, for example, and also in study-related issues.

I have now achieved my goal and can enjoy the results of my JYU.INTEGRA training. This is an excellent training programme for anyone seeking to develop their academic skills, get practical support for career planning and learn about Finnish culture and language.

The training also provided a unique opportunity to meet people coming from different cultures and backgrounds. Sharing our thoughts and experiences together was both interesting and educational.
