Information for decision making in sustainable development.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the four departments of the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. In the Department we educate experts whose skills will play a key role in the development of a digital society both nationally and internationally.

A wide spectrum of multidisciplinary mathematical and statistical research and training produces experts for teaching, research and expert positions. The main areas of research and education are mathematical analysis, stochastics, statistics and teacher education in mathematics.

The Department offers many options for active collaboration with students and organisations. The aim is to bring expertise and research results to society regionally, nationally and internationally. The department is also involved in the LUMA Science Education Centre of the University of Jyväskylä. The LUMA Centre’s aim is to inspire and motivate children and youth into mathematics, science, and technology through the latest methods and activities of science and technology education.

An important part of the department's activities are different visits. The goal is to inspire young people to mathematics and statistics.

Working together in unity

The Department's valuable strenght is its personnel and good team spirit, not forgetting the students.

The Department is very communal. Every week, the teachers provide support for exercises in mathematics and statistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has grown from a handful of people to a significant international player. The department is very international, about a third of the staff is from other countries than Finland. The department has about 70 teaching and research staff. The department has about 350 students, and average 30 Master of Science and less than 10 Doctors of Philosophy graduated annually. International and national cooperation networks are extensive and the department is involved in numerous national and international research networks. Research results are published in the highest international scientific publication series.

The department is close-knit and the students are an important part of the Department. Students are supported in a variety of ways during their studies from the first days. For example, students can get support for exercises of mathematics and statistics from the department's own students and teachers.

The department also works closely with educational institutions, e.g. in the form of visits. The department participates in the annual Researchers' Night event, which displays the diversity of science and its impact on citizens' daily lives in fun.

Mission

An enthusiastic, encouraging and close community of researchers and teachers is built, that produces world-class fundamental research. This directs and forms the basis for human-centered and high-level education.

Vision

We are an internationally recognized centre of mathematical and statistical research. Our staff, as well as the researcher, teacher and expert alumni that we educate, are influential at the forefront of research, in key roles in business and industry, as well as in classrooms.
