Functional Molecules and Materials

Research in Functional Molecules and Materials is focussed on the design, synthesis, characterization and exploitation of functional molecules and materials spanning the entire chemical spectrum.

Of key interest is the structure-property relationship, which is crucial for understanding the performance of molecules and materials in different applications and being able to modulate it in a desirable manner. Breakthroughs in this area are not only of fundamental importance but also critical for improving existing technologies and inventing new ones.

High quality research is carried out with broad expertise that includes multiple fields such as supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, chemical synthesis, computational chemistry,  catalysis, biomolecular chemistry and materials chemistry. The research makes use of a range of scientific skills and techniques including inorganic and organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, chemical and physical characterisation and analysis methods and theoretical approaches. Our work is carried out in collaboration with many national and international research groups and units, including the local Nanoscience Center (NSC), as well as with industrial partners.
