The Center of Expertise for Circular Economy in brief
The management team of the CECE met for the first time on November 2022, after a longer period of preparation. The aim is to create a billion-euro ecosystem in Finland for the circular economy.
The network aims to promote sustainable business. Based on the recovery of valuable substances from side streams and biomass, the network will act as a bridge between high-level basic research and analytical method development and the development needs of companies. Our key goals are to improve the efficiency of raw material cycles, resource wisdom and high value-added products. The valuechains are visible from raw material to final product: they are carbon neutral and creating wellbeing.
We aim to be a valued partner and an efficient and effective international player in the circular economy. We promote the commercialisation of technological innovations and support the creation and growth of new spin-off companies as circular economy experts. A key part of our activities is to identify and train future talent for industry and research institutions.

Collaboration is for example research, product development, and participation in national and international expert missions between organisations.
Practical activities include cooperation projects funded separately, joint events, expert visits, and thematic or working groups of experts around identified themes.
A key element of collaborative research will be:
- Identifying the research and product development needs of companies
- Making effective use of research infrastructure
- Identify the most suitable funding sources
- Project preparation and funding applications
- Doctoral projects in collaboration with companies and/or research organisations
- Joint publications
The Department of Chemistry coordinates the Center of Expertise for Circular Economy. The management and other staff are employed by the Department of Chemistry.
The management team includes the representatives from all the organisations involved in the CECE. Vice-rector Pasi Raiskinmäki is the chairman of the management team. The management team decides on strategic orientations, thematic r&d-areas, approves action plans, decides on the use of resources and decides on membership and membership fees.
Each the thematic areas of research and development has its own thematic group to develop and maintain existing research cooperation. The thematic groups are coordinated by the JYU and each organisation nominates a person/persons for the thematic groups of its choice, based on its research interests.
