Project description

Only about 20% of children and youth meet the recommendations for physical activity. Children and youth spend a large portion of their weekdays in school, so there are significant opportunities to increase physical activity and practice motor skills during the school day. It is important to identify opportunities for physical activity and motor skills practice on school grounds, as these skills have been shown to be linked to academic success and increased well-being. Additionally, motor proficiency can predict future physical activity. Ideally, the schoolyard can provide diverse opportunities for learning, physical activity, skill development, and holistic growth and development for young people.

The research project maps out the structures of the schoolyard and examines the affordances for physical activity and various motor skill practices that occur on the yard. The yard is systematically assessed using standardized forms, and student activity during breaks is observed systematically.
