Other Home - documentary theatre project on integration
Table of contents
Project description
In autumn 2017, the Other Home project produced a documentary theatre performance for the Finnish National Theatre’s Omapohja studio. In the performance Finnish-medium theatre was integrated into a situation where the potential of art is no longer only in the hands and hearts of fluent speakers of Finnish. A diverse group of people, at home in the world of art, took to the stage. The performance was about integration and also about non-integration. It made us reflect on the role of art and community in the lives of different people. The stories of people who fled the war and survived the life-threatening journey were told not only through speech, but also through music and movement.
The performance was directed and designed by Jussi Lehtonen, artistic director of the Finnish National Theatre's Touring Stage. In spring 2017, the Other Home project organised two low-threshold theatre workshops in collaboration with the City of Helsinki. The workshops were attended by adults from refugee backgrounds who were either artists or wanted to try making art. The first workshop focused on poems and stories written by the participants and how to adapt them for the stage. The second workshop focused on music and various expressive exercises.
