Project description

OneChild research project (2022–2025) focuses on the topical issue of declining fertility rates in Finland and other high-income countries. The project examines the extent to which first-time parents' experiences related to the transition to parenthood, early steps of parenthood, and work–family reconciliation are associated with their intentions of having another child or the birth of a second child. Valuable information is provided to the development of support measures related to parenthood and working life to support the well-being of parents and families as well as possibly subsequent childbearing for those who desire for more than one child.

OneChild utilizes two longitudinal datasets

Cross-national longitudinal survey data collected as part of the CopaGloba consortium (2020–2022) is utilized to examine and compare, how changes in work-family reconciliation experiences during the transition to parenthood as well as co-parenting experiences and parenting self-efficacy beliefs when the firstborn is 1.5 years old predict first-time mothers’ and fathers' intentions of having a second child in Finland.

Longitudinal survey data collected as part of the CHILDCARE consortium (2016–2020) is used in investigating how Finnish first-time parents’ experiences related to early steps of parenthood and work–family reconciliation predict the probability of a second birth.
