Project description
Movement for Data Literacy (MODALITY) is a multi-method research project that takes a qualitative approach to comprehensively examine the datafication of school education. This is achieved by bringing together micro- and macro-level perspectives on datafication.
The project's theoretical premise is that the macro-level logic of datafication (e.g., data-driven profiling and steering of individuals) is replicated in schools' everyday data practices (e.g., in the utilisation of learning analytics). This trend jeopardises the critical agency of teachers and students in the context of datafication. New theories and techniques for data literacy education are needed.
Project goals
- Identify how the datafication of society and culture is replicated in schools
- Develop methods to reshape these practices so that they intentionally teach critical data literacy
- Develop a relational approach to data literacy
