Movement for Data Literacy (MODALITY)

Digital datafication is a major phenomenon of our time, including in the educational sector. The MODALITY project conducts both empirical and theoretical investigations into datafication in schools, whilst also developing methods of enhancing students' data literacy.

Project description

Movement for Data Literacy (MODALITY) is a multi-method research project that takes a qualitative approach to comprehensively examine the datafication of school education. This is achieved by bringing together micro- and macro-level perspectives on datafication.

The project's theoretical premise is that the macro-level logic of datafication (e.g., data-driven profiling and steering of individuals) is replicated in schools' everyday data practices (e.g., in the utilisation of learning analytics). This trend jeopardises the critical agency of teachers and students in the context of datafication. New theories and techniques for data literacy education are needed.

Project goals

  1. Identify how the datafication of society and culture is replicated in schools
  2. Develop methods to reshape these practices so that they intentionally teach critical data literacy
  3. Develop a relational approach to data literacy

Work packages

The project consists of the following work packages:
WP1
Identify the processes and discourses shaping the datafication of education in Finland.
WP2
Identify the unintended lessons taught and learned through everyday data literacy practices in schools.
WP3
Design and test pedagogical methods to teach data literacy through the critical framing of everyday data practices.
WP4
Cross-national comparison of everyday data practices in schools and the macro-level processes and discourses shaping the datafication of education.
WP5
Reconceptualization of data literacy and data literacy education by synthesizing the data from all empirical WPs.
