LIFE Revives: Reviving freshwater pearl mussel populations and their habitats

The six year LIFE Revives project (LIFE20 NAT/FI/000611) started in September 2021 with 12 project partners after several years of planning and preparation. The goal of the project is to improve the ecological status of the freshwater pearl mussel in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, and to achieve sufficient levels of recruiting and favorable conservation status for the freshwater pearl mussel.

Project description

The LIFE Revives project (LIFE20 NAT/FI/000611) aims to improve the ecological status of 69 rivers in Finland, Sweden and Estonia which represent 7 % of the freshwater pearl mussel populations in those countries (FPM, Margaritifera margaritifera). The purpose of these actions is to achieve sufficient conservation status and to improve the FPM populations' recruitment capacity in the project countries.

Monitoring based results are gathered during the project for further utilization. LIFE Revives aims to improve and unify European FPM protection measures. Authorities, forestry sector and land owners' participation in this project offers resrouces and enables stakeholders to commit to FPM conservation. The primary activities are:

  • Restoring habitats for the FPM and its host fish: Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta)
  • Captive breeding of FPM and reintroduction into rivers
  • Improving conservation expertise and public awareness
  • Developing innovative in-stream restoration techniques
