LIFE Revives: Reviving freshwater pearl mussel populations and their habitats

Six-year LIFE Revives project started in 2021 as a result of several years of background work and planning with 12 project partners. The aim is to improve the ecological conditions of freshwater pearl mussel populations across Finland, Sweden and Estonia. Consequently, a favourable conservation status and adequate recruitment of freshwater pearl mussel populations after the project is achieved.

Restoration measures are carried out in 69 rivers representing 7 % of theÌýfreshwater pearl mussel (FPM, Margaritifera margaritifera) populations in the project countries.ÌýMonitoring-based results of the project actions are gathered for later replication - the aim is to improve and unify the FPM conservation methodologies in Europe. Involvement of authorities, forestry sector and landowners will increase stakeholders' capability and commitment to FPM conservation. The project's main activities are:

  • Restoration of FPM habitats and its host fishes, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta)
  • Captive breeding of FPM and reintroduction to rivers
  • Improvement of conservation expertise and public awareness
  • Development of innovative in-stream restoration techniques
