Pauliina Puranen
Biography
I am a Doctoral Researcher in Finnish language. My research focuses on questions of Finnish as a second language, multilingualism, and language and race, particularly in the context of vocational education and training in Finland.
I have worked in various research and teaching positions in the Nordic countries and North America. Most recently, during the 2023–2024 academic year, I was a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. In 2020–2021, I worked as a researcher on two projects funded by the Research Council of Finland: the Building Blocks project, where we explored language awareness in vocational education, and the Crossing Borders project, which focused on art-based research methods, language, and belonging. From 2018 to 2019, I worked on a development project at the University of Toronto in Canada. I have also taught Finnish language and culture at Stockholm University in Sweden (spring 2018) and at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark (2015–2016).
Research interests
My PhD research explores language ideologies, L2 majority language use, and multilingualism in Finnish vocational education and training. I analyze ethnographic data applying critical sociolinguistic research methods. My work is supervised by Prof. Minna Suni (Finnish language) and Prof. Sari Pietikäinen (Discourse Studies), and it is part of the Building Blocks project (PI Prof. Suni).
The research has been funded by the Ellen and Artturi Nyyssönen Foundation, the Finnish Literature Society, the OLVI Foundation, the Fulbright Finland Foundation, the American-Scandinavian Foundation (Suomi-Amerikka Yhdistysten Liitto), and the Finnish Cultural Foundation as well as the Department of Language & Communication Studies and the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.
