Digital Archive

The Digital Archive consists of the library's two legal deposit workstations, through which all electronic legal deposit material can be read, viewed and listened to without user IDs.

National Collection's online and electronic materials

The Digital Archive workstations allow you to read, watch and listen to Legal Deposit materials that are not freely available online.

Digital Archive contains four databases:

  • The online archive. Finnish online resources since 2006.
  • Digi-database. Digital materials of the National Library, such as newspapers.
  • Varia. Electronic legal deposit copies of books, recordings, magazines, etc.
  • Ritva-tietokanta. Radio and TV archive of the National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI).

The National Library of Finland holds legally deposited materials such as e-books and e-journals, as well as official publications in digital format, maps, music recordings and music scores.

The collection also includes Finnish websites and other domestic online material. The National Library also digitises material retrospectively, its Digi-database includes a comprehensive collection of Finnish newspapers and magazines. Domestic radio and television programmes are stored by the National Audiovisual Institute.

Finnish Web Archive

The Finnish Web archive has been scouring the Internet for Finnish material since 2006. The material is accumulated through an annual Finland collection and in addition, the archive is constantly being scanned for Twitter accounts, videos, discussion columns, online magazine content and content collected by theme.

Finnish Web Archive - Index

The Web Archive Index is a service that allows you to check whether a page is stored in the online archive based on its web address. Due to copyright law provisions, the actual content of the online archive can only be viewed and listened to on the public domain.

For more information on the content of the online archive and on the public domain activities, please visit the National Library's website.

Internet Archive

The Internet Archive has been collecting online material since 1996. If you can't find the page you're looking for in a Finnish online archive, try the Internet Archive, which also provides direct access to archived website content.

National Library of Finland's Digi

The Digi-service contains newspapers, magazines, broadsheets, books, maps, postcards and sheet music digitised by the National Library of Finland.

Currently, the digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi service contains more than 28 million digitised pages, including a collection of newspapers from the late 17th century to the present day. The oldest digitised material in the collection, which is already copyright-free, is also openly available online. The Digi brings together all the material digitised by the National Library, which means that it also provides access to digitised material from other National Library services (such as Doria).

The database already contains over 19 million pages of digitised newspapers, including all Swedish-language newspaper material published in Finland. There are 7 million pages of periodicals and 2 million pages of books. Among the most recent digitisations is Filmihullu, Finland's oldest film magazine, all editions of which are now available at Digital Archive workstations.

Finnish newspapers up to 1939 and Swedish newspapers up to 1949 are freely available in the Digi-database, even from your home computer. By logging in to the service with your university HAKA ID, you can access a wider range of reading rights. From the Digital Archive workstations you can read all the newspapers digitised by the National Library of Finland.

You can search the material or browse by title. It is also possible to collect clippings in electronic format by logging in to Digi. Printing facilities are available on the workstations in the Digital Archive.

The National Library is constantly digitising new journals, you can check the digitisation rate per journal in the National Library's digitised journals .

Varia

The Varia database stores legal deposit copies of books, magazines and music received electronically. Varia also contains books, small prints, maps, games and sound recordings digitised by the National Library of Finland for which copyright is still valid. The electronic legal deposit copies have been collected since 2008, while the back-digitised material from the National Library is older.

The Varia can only be browsed at legal deposit (Digital Archive) workstations, but the publications in the database are searchable through the National Library's search service.

Radio and Television Archive (RTVA)

The National Audiovisual Institute KAVI started archiving radio and TV programmes in 2009, as required by the Cultural Material Act. Yle's TV programmes from 1957-2008 are available as a separate collection.

The Ritva database captures the full programme stream of the main domestic radio and TV channels, plus samples from almost 100 other channels. The broadcast streams of the channels are captured "24/7" as they are: all plots, breaks and commercials are included in their original form.

Due to copyright regulations, the actual content of the archive can only be watched and listened to on legal deposit workstations. In addition to Jyväskylä Digital Archive, the workstations are located in the National Library, KAVI, the libraries of the Universities of Turku, Eastern Finland, Tampere and Oulu, the Library of the Parliament and the Helsinki Central Library Oodi.

However, the database can be freely browsed online, although the actual content is only accessible from legal deposit workstations (Digital Archive). So you can already check from home to see if the radio or TV programme you are looking for is available on Ritva.

Use of legal deposit (Digital Archive) workstations

It is not possible to make digital copies on legal deposit workstations, e.g. via email or cloud service, as the workstations are not connected to the network. It is also not possible to copy content from the workstations to external storage media such as memory sticks.

However, it is possible to take printouts of the content, record it through the speakers and take pictures of the screen. It may therefore be useful to take your own laptop with you when you work.

Where to find the DigiArchive?

Jyväskylä University Library Lähde, lower ground floor of the library BP 15.
