Ylistönrinne renovation project: Ambiotica YAA-YAC facility changes now complete, construction of YAD to start in September
The alterations to the facilities in the YAA-YAC wings of Ambiotica have been completed as scheduled. It also seems that it stayed within the budget. The facilities were handed over to the University on 16 August 2024. Moving in and practical arrangements for these facilities will be completed at the beginning of September. Along with the alterations, the operations of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science are now concentrated in the YAA-YAC-wings.
“The Ylistönrinne renovation project is challenging,” says Dean Mikko Mönkkönen. “Keeping it within the budget so far adds confidence that the project will proceed as planned. This involves good cooperation and flow of information between different parties.”
Thanks to the Department of Biological and Environmental Science
However, the construction work will continue in the chemical storage facilities on the first floor of YAB, to provide departments with renovated facilities for chemical waste. The work will start in Iate September and early October and last until the end of the year.
“To succeeding in this challenging project phase, the staff of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science has played an important role in integrating the activities of the University and various contractors,” says Project Coordinator Jussi Ahokas from the Ģֱ. “The intense involvement and engagement of Professor Jari Ylänne and Chief Laboratory Technician Petri Papponen have been pivotal for successfully pulling through the whole thing.”
Construction work at YAD starts in September
There are now no JYU activities in the YAD wing of Ambiotica. The building is controlled by the construction project and is being turned into a construction site. Access to the site is permitted for project personnel only. Demolition work will start in September and will cause a noise nuisance at the Nanoscience Center as well. For this reason, the offices in the YK building can be used for temporary relocations.
“The users of the building will be informed more specifically about relocation practices,” Ahokas points out. “The main contractor will also deliver weekly information about the progress of construction work.”
Use caution when near the construction site
Staff and students must follow the safety instructions at the construction site. The project is constantly advancing and changing, so you should be particularly careful when moving in the vicinity of the site. Especially the points where the site traffic intersects with other traffic call for specific attention from everybody.
“This information has been highlighted for the contractors as well and by requiring measures for improved safety,” Ahokas clarifies.

Bike parking pilot continues in the Ylistönrinne parking hall
Based on a staff request, sheltered bike parking has been piloted since the spring. The pilot will continue for the autumn in the Ylistönrinne parking hall. The bike parking site has racks enabling frame locking along with basic tools and an air pump.
E-scooters must be parked in the spaces designated for them
The outdoor areas now also feature specific parking spaces for e-scooters. E-scooters should be parked in the designated spaces. Scooters may not block any entryways or access to bike racks. E-scooter operators will limit parking to the designated areas.
“It is believed that the introduction of these parking areas will make e-scooter parking significantly more organised, which will increase safety as well,” Ahokas says. “The parking spaces are marked with a painted electric scooter symbol.”
