The facility alterations and maintenance work in dzپ’s YAA-YAC sections have progressed according to schedule. The first facilities in the YAB and YAC sections are expected to be ready at the end of March. Along with these changes, the biosafety laboratories can move into the new facilities on the first floor of the YAB section. The former library space will serve as a technical facility for freezers, and the YAC section will include a storage for chemicals. The rest of the facility modifications will be completed during spring and summer. The last phase to be finished includes the modification and maintenance works on the second floor of the YAB section.

Staff deserves a special thanks

The project has progressed well so far, and the construction work that has taken place alongside our daily work has gone smoothly.

“There are always some problems, of course, and some things do not go as planned, but the way these situations are handled is largely decisive for progressing,” says Project Coordinator Jussi Ahokas from JYU Facility Services. “A special thanks goes to the department’s persons in charge, Jari Ylänne and Petri Papponen, as well as to the project’s contractors and management. Big thanks also to the staff of the department for their positive attitude.”

A water leak in the relocation facilities in YAD

In the summer, before the relocation, a leak in the roof drain was repaired on the fourth floor of the YAD section. The repairment was successful, but the frost period in January broke the drainpipe and caused thus a water leak across several facilities when the weather warmed up. The facilities in the leak area have been evacuated and the wet structures will be taken out and dried, and these facilities will not be used for relocation. Moving back to the actual facilities from the other relocations nearby is expected to take place in April.

Planning for YAD continues

Planning for the extension and renovations of YAD started after a short break. During spring, we will finish the plans for building technology and structures. From the users’ point of view, the start of the planning means participation in it.

“Participation is not as intensive as before, because the plans have already been approved,” Ahokas clarifies. “At first, we will be recalling with those having participated in the facility planning, what kind of facilities there will be. At this stage, it is still possible to take up possible needs for minor changes to the plan.”

Checking the user procurements is also an important task in order to ensure that they would suit to the purpose. Also, these will be checked in spring together with the users.

The construction of the YAD section is scheduled to start at the end of summer 2024.
