The University’s research profile strengthens – JYU succeeded excellently in the PROFI funding round

The funded research fields are multiliteracy, the effects of physical activity, and nuclear astrophysics. Strong multidisciplinarity is characteristic for all the funded fields. The Rector Keijo Hämäläinen will decide how the funding is divided between the three fields.
Based on the suggestions of units, three profiling areas were selected to continue the development of teaching and research at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.New profiling area is multiliteracy from the perspective of learning, participation and societal togetherness.Multiliteracy refers to skills to produce, understand and process languages and media – the skills that enable equal and intercultural communication.Already ongoing profiling area of applied linguistics is closely related to multiliteracy.
The effects of physical exercise through the lifespan has been examined widely in the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and also as part of JYU’s profiling. The profiling area focuses on the effects of exercise and physical activity to muscles, cells and signals transmitted by molecules. The third new profiling area helps to understand the basic interactions of nuclear astrophysics, the physics of atom nuclei structure, and cosmology.
Profiling accelerates and supports the development of research quality in compliance with the strategy of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. According to the assessment panel, focussing on strategic core fields, cooperation with other research institutes in the core fields and commitment to open science are JYU’s strengths.
The Academy of Finland supports Finnish universities in further developing research field portfolios based on their strategies and reinforcing the preconditions for high-quality research. This was the fifth round of PROFI funding. In total, universities applied for 103 million euro and were granted 50 million euro.
Eleven of the thirteen universities that applied were granted funding. The funding, granted for four years, varies between 500,000 euros and 14.7 million euros.
