The QS Sustainability Ranking assesses how universities respond to various challenges related to the environment, society and governance. The focus is particularly on the social impact of the university, for example, the impact of research and the sustainability competence of graduates.

“The improved ranking is mainly the result of more specific reporting in this year,” says Expert Ulla Helimo. “The position now reflects more accurately the work we have done on responsibility issues in education, for example. A good example of this is the studies on planetary well-being, which are available not only to our degree students, but to everyone through the Open University.”

The area in which the Ģֱ scored highest was the impact of education, where it was ranked 75th in the world.

The QS ranking system takes into account both the environmental and social impact of universities.

Social impact is assessed in five areas: employability and opportunities, equality, health and wellbeing, impact of education, and knowledge exchange. Environmental impact is assessed in three areas: environmental education, environmental sustainability, and environmental research.

To obtain a QS Sustainability rating, a university must be committed to the prevention of climate change and it must have a sufficient number of publications on the UN Sustainable Development Goals as well as a QS World University Ranking.

The assessment is based on basic numerical data, publication data, data from alumni and employer surveys, and national statistics.
