The international Jyväskylä summer school unites natural science and technology
The international summer school is JYU’s specialty, offering both unique doctoral education and an opportunity to build international networks. This is the 29th summer school in Jyväskylä. It is organised by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Faculty of Information Technology.
The collaboration combines natural sciences, technology and mathematics across the borders of departments and faculties.
“In addition to quality teaching, the purpose of the summer school is to offer an opportunity to get familiar with the students of natural sciences and information technology from other countries and this way create international contacts, which many times will be useful in the future”, says Associate Professor Jussi Toppari, the chair of the summer school.
International lecturers
The summer school will have 23 renowned lecturers, of which 17 come from abroad. The programme includes 17 courses in the fields of biology, physics, chemistry, cognitive science, cyber security, mathematics, nanoscience, statistics, mathematical information technology and information systems science.
The biology lectures handle, for example, climate change and sustainability. The teacher will be Professor Tom Hatfield, a specialist of environmental risk management and risk communication from California State University.
In chemistry, Teemu Näykki, a leading metrologist from the Finnish Environment Institute, will lecture on the validation of analysis methods and the assessment of reliability. A lecturer in nanoscience will be Professor Pablo Ballester from the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia. His research focuses on the design and implementation of functional nanoscale molecular machines and structures.
In computational sciences Associate Professor Andreas Stefik from the University of Nevada will lecture about the methods of human-oriented development work with computer programming languages, in which he is one of the world’s most renowned experts.
Barbara Kaltenbacher will lecture on the course “Iterative Regularization Methods for Inverse Problems”. She is Professor of Applied Analysis at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.
An open lecture on the sources and impacts of microplastics
As a part of the summer school, Professor Jussi Kukkonen from the Ģֱ will give a special lecture on the sources and impacts of microplastics in the environment.
Microplastics are plastic particles less than five millimetres in size. There is a growing public concern over the presence of plastic waste in the environment. What do we know about the sources, distribution, or the impact it is having on the environment? How permanent is the issue? Is there anything that a single consumer could do to diminish the problem?
The lecture is held on Wednesday, 14th of August at in Seminaarinmäki, Main Building (C1) at 6–7 p.m. There is a free entrance to the lecture. The lecture will be held in Finnish.
Professor Jussi Kukkonen is working at the Ģֱ’s Department of Biological and Environmental Science. Kukkonen is an environmental toxicologist and has studied impacts of a variety of organic chemicals, metals, nanoparticles, and microplastics in aquatic environments.
Free entrance to a rock concert
In connection with the farewell party of the Jyväskylä Summer School, there will be othe “Rock after Research” -concert on Thursday, 15 August. The concert is open to the public.
Music from the 70s-influenced hard rock to the all-time greatest hits will be played by Whipping Post and The Salonkileijonat (Loungeroom Lizards), both related to the University.
