The instructions and policy for changing JYU username

The University's username is generally unchangeable, but it is possible to change it for legitimate reasons. Read the policy and instructions here!

The username is randomly generated from parts of a person's name and is essentially unchangeable throughout the period of studying or employment at the University. However, you can request a change of your JYU username for a justified reason. Requests for a change of username will be processed twice a year: at the end of the year and in the summer.

Usernames will be changed for justified reasons, such as:

  • The password is considered to be clearly offensive or inappropriate.
  • The user has transitioned and the username directly or indirectly reveals the person's former legal gender. This takes into account the greater need for privacy of transgender people.
  • There is some other particularly compelling reason for changing the username, such as a security threat.

It is worth noting that changing the username can pose challenges for the use of information systems: it means that the user will not have access to or edit information previously stored or edited, such as files, group workspaces or messages posted in discussion groups.

How to request a change of your username

If you want to change your username, please first carefully read the instructions.

You can apply for a username change by submitting a free-form request, stating the reasons why you want to change your username. Submit the application to the Registry Office (kirjaamo[at]jyu.fi) using secure e-mail. See the .

Requests for username changes will be evaluated and changes will be made in the end of the year and in the summer. The next deadlines for sending requests are:

  • At the latest by Fri 24 November 2023 for processing in late 2023
  • At the latest by Tue 30 April 2024 for summer 2024.

If the request for a change of username is accepted, the digital services will discuss with the user in detail the measures to be taken by the user and the consequences of the change of username.
