Plenty of applicants to new programmes – JYU is among the most popular universities in Finland

In the total number of applicants, the Ģֱ was the fifth popular university in Finland after the universities of Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Eastern Finland. In the number of primary applicants, the Ģֱ was the fifth after Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Aalto University.
Of new programmes, applicants were especially interested in the master’s degree programme of security and strategic analysis in the Faculty of Information Technology (185 applicants). The renewed programme of cultures, communities and change in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences increased its number of applicants 67% from the previous year (244 applicants to the bachelor’s and master’s programme).
The number of applicants increased especially in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programme in biology, 20% (704, increase 117) and in the natural resources and environment programme, 38% (292, increase 80) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.
The most popular study option this year was psychology with 2,828 applicants (increase 44%). Other popular study options were business studies (1,426 applicants), class teacher education (1,357 applicants) and economics (1,213 applicants).
The toughest competition for study places was in psychology, which had 37 applications per a study place, social sciences of sport (28), economics (27) and social work (26).
The number of applicants who had a study place at JYU as their primary choice was 6,265. The number of applicants to bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes was 13,674, from which the number of primary applicants 4,785. The master’s degree programmes had 2,079 applicants, from which 1,466 primary applicants.
The Faculty of Education and Psychology increased its total number of applicants most, 12%. The total number of applicants in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science increased 8% and the number of primary applicants 10%. The number of applicants in the Faculty of Information Technology grew 3% and primary applicants 13%.
“The results show that education at the Ģֱ interests applicants broadly. It is especially gratifying to see the growth in the number of primary applicants of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Faculty of Information Technology,” says Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso.
No separate invitation is usually sent for the entrance examinations of the Ģֱ. The results of student admission will be published by 28 June 2019. Applicants can see their results in the Studyinfo.fi service.
