The action plan for the renewal of facility strategy was presented to the Campus Development Group earlier this year. The action plan has been processed in a project group that includes representatives from JYU and real estate specialists from Newsec. In the Campus Development Group’s meeting on the project group presented the conclusions of the clarification phase, the goals to be suggested for the strategy, and an action plan for implementing the strategy. The goals of the facility strategy, among other things, were updated based on comments from the Campus Development Group.

Goals of the facility strategy:

  1. Facilities that promote cooperation: Opportunities for multidisciplinary cooperation are acknowledged and natural meeting points are created.
  2. Resource wisdom: The use of facilities and decision-making related to facility development are arranged in a responsible and resource-wise manner.
  3. Suitable facilities: The provision of JYU facilities is developed systematically to meet the needs of varying users.

Opportunities to contribute to the renewal of the facility strategy during the spring

During spring 2023, we will be implementing the following measures to support the renewal of the facility strategy, in which the university community will have the opportunity to participate:

  • Operational mapping interviews with faculties, University Services, and independent institutes. We will invite people from each department to participate in an interview to gather an up-to-date perspective on changes in the departments’ activities and future needs for facilities and cooperation.
  • Monitoring the occupancy of teaching facilities. We will seek to establish how well existing teaching facilities are meeting the needs. We will identify, for example, how full the classrooms are and whether suitable classroom sizes have been found for the groups. We will ask teachers to track the number of participants in the course’s teaching sessions during the fourth period. Teaching staff will receive separate instructions on how to do this.
  • Measuring the occupancy of workspaces. In the era of hybrid work, we are trying to find out how well the current working spaces meet the needs of the work. The aim is to determine the appropriateness of the university’s facilities and the adequacy of different types of space. We have tried to use as much as possible the existing information provided by the different systems. To supplement this information, a further observation of the workspaces will be carried out in April/May, during which the workspaces will be visited, and the number of users observed.
  • A pilot space for cooperation. One of the goals of the facility strategy is to create facilities that promote cooperation. We will convert a workspace in Agora into a shared workspace. More information on this will be provided in April.
  • Survey. During the spring we will conduct a survey of all users of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥â€™s facilities. We will inform you more about the survey during April.

The project group will work on and analyse the data concerning the facilities and the results will be communicated as the project progresses. We hope that the university community will actively participate in the development of our shared facilities.
