Nanoscientists find a job easily- Business Day at the Nanoscience Center is an excellent networking event for tech experts

A business day event provides an excellent possibility for networking both students and companies: The students will gain insight regarding the expectations and skillsets that the businesses are seeking after. In addition, the researchers provide the businesses a possibility to familiarize with the laboratories and measurements instruments at the NSC and the neighboring Departments of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry at the Faculty.
”The most significant societal impact of a university comes from training experts who are used to solve difficult problems by using scientific methods and instruments. In Business Day, we showcase this problem-solving capacity and the problem solvers to industry partners”, says Professor Tero Heikkilä, Scientific Director of the Nanoscience Center.
The Nanoscience Center is the largest Finnish multidisciplinary scientific research unit in the field of nanoscience. It has over 140 researchers in the Departments of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics.
The employment situation of graduated nanoscientists is excellent. 97 % of the over 200 graduates are currently employed. About half of them are working in the companies and most of the other half in the academia. The JYU offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes specializing in nanosciences.
Multidisciplinary collaboration with the businesses
The participating companies include JAMK University of Applied Sciences, ALD CoCampus, Bluefors Ltd, VTT, Berggren Ltd, Stresstech Ltd, Rannan Teollisuuskone Ltd, IQM, Senop, Millog, Jyväskylä Startup Factory, PerkinElmer Finland Ltd, and Immuno Diagnostic Ltd and Business Finland. Business Day is supported by the JYU Foundation.
Business Day is a networking event targeted for students, university staff and company representatives. Science-related companies will come to the event to search for motivated students and network with the researchers.
Throughout its history, NSC has been active in industry collaboration and service research. The first Business Day was organized in 2012.
”Business Day is an excellent opportunity for networking between businesses, university staff and students. In the event the company representative will to get to know the multidisciplinary expertise at the NSC. The future talents will get a chance to see what kind of job opportunities the companies and the academy have to offer. This is our effort to respond to the expert shortage that is troubling the tech industry and made is to the headlines in the national media during the past few months”, says Dr. Heli Lehtivuori, the Research Coordinator of the Nanoscience Center, and the organizer of the Business Day.
