Movi’s pioneering AI literacies course for all JYU students continues – register now!

As AI-generated content becomes more common, it is more essential than ever to think critically about the information we use and consume. How should AI be regulated? How will itaffect academia and employment? How can we make best use of it?
We want students to be prepared for the AI revolution.
The course is offered twice in Autumn and twice in Spring. Students earn 3-4 credits. You can work on your own optional project. You can even apply it to your coursework or dissertation.
Explore the capabilities of AI-based tools, such as Copilot,ChatGPT and more. Learn about AI ethics, technology basics, and working-life applications. Discuss where you stand on the ethical and social implications. Suitable for all disciplines and years, this course, using English and Finnish, gives you hands-on practice while exploring AI’s impact on education, work and society.
Students and teachers often ask about AI tools in the context of plagiarism, cheating and assessment. It is good to remember that AI tools can be used ethically and can help for example in research and writing processes, and with using foreignlanguages, while at the same time we acknowledge its limitations.
“We in Jyväskylä are pioneers in offering this kind of course to all our students. AI is something we all encounter in one way or the other, and it is important to understand its usefulness in academic work, but also see the ethical side and know how to use these constantly evolving tools in a responsible way,” says Peppi Taalas, Director of Strategic Development of Education at JYU.
JYU is rolling out similar courses for staff. Movi’s Päivi Kousa, who develops university pedagogy through JYULearn and manages skills and competences strategy throughout Europe for the EU funded FORTHEM Alliance, adds “We have toremember that staff and students are in the same position when it comes to new, fast-developing technology. This is a great opportunity to explore what it really means to learn from each other and develop knowledge together.”
The course is taught by five teachers, Maria Lampinen, Jenny Tarvainen, Pasi Hämälainen, Päivi Kousa and Chris Jarvis.
