Movi pioneers AI literacies course for all JYU students – register now!

As AI-based applications become more widespread, it is important to understand how to use them ethically, creatively and effectively. As AI-generated content becomes more common, it is more essential than ever to think critically about the information we use and consume. ѴDZ’s new course AI literacies for study and working life offers help in such subjects.

Starting January 2024, it is possible to earn 3-4 credits exploring AI-based tools, such as ChatGPT, in ѴDZ’s new course called AI literacies for study and working life. Learn about ethical usage, technology basics, and working-life applications. Discuss where you stand on the ethical and social implications. Suitable for all disciplines and years, this course, using English and Finnish, gives you hands-on practice while exploring AI’s impact on education, work and society.

“We in Jyväskylä are pioneers in offering this kind of course to all our students. AI is something we all encounter in one way or the other, and it is important to understand its usefulness in academic work, but also see the ethical side and know how to use these constantly evolving tools in a responsible way,” says Peppi Taalas, Director of Strategic Development of Education at JYU.

The course is taught by three teachers, Maria Lampinen, Jenny Tarvainen and Chris Jarvis.

“As a language teacher”, says Maria, “I’m fascinated by the opportunities to enhance language learning. Jenny is an award-winning computational linguist, and Chris was once a professional misconduct investigator, so we are a diverse bunch and look forward to recruiting a mixture of students from different fields”.

Be prepared for the AI revolution

Students and teachers often ask about AI tools in the context of plagiarism, cheating and assessment. It is good to remember that AI tools can be used ethically. AI can help for example in research and writing processes, and with language learning, which are all explored on the course.

We have to think about how or whether AI should be regulated, how it will affect academia and employment, and how we can make best use of it.

We want students to be prepared for the AI revolution. That's why we’ve designed the course so you can work on your own project, for example using your coursework or dissertation, says Jenny.
