Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics allows the use of artificial intelligence in studies

Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) has created the first set of guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and language models in student assignments. The policy is generally permissive, because the intent is to teach students to use the emerging technology correctly and responsibly.

JSBE allows the use of AI in studies. JSBE has made a policy that the use of AI should not be prohibited or strictly limited in studies.

"Our view is that AI applications are an emerging technology and an important part of future job skills. They already have many use cases that are generally useful and can help student, so instead of restricting, we want to guide the students about their possibilities," says Vilma Luoma-aho, Vice Dean of Education at JSBE.

AI applications, such as the most widely publicized ChatGPT, are available to everyone and are also easy to use. Therefore, the topic has also been discussed in the university, and some educational institutions have adopted opposite policies.

"It is true that AI can be used to cheat in written assignments. However, it is impossible to detect or verify this. Therefore, it is in everyone's interest that we give both teachers and students a framework to work with at this stage," explains Associate Professor Mikko Rönkkö, who has experimented with AI in his own teaching.

According to the guidelines, students are responsible for their own learning and compliance with the rules. On the other hand, teachers must ensure that the assignments that they use cannot be passed by just submitting generic text produced by an AI.

"Because this is a new phenomenon, we will certainly update and refine our policy in the future. However, we wanted to give some guidance as soon as possible so that every teacher and student does not have to think about the issue and its significance from scratch themselves," Luoma-aho says.

Mikko Rönkkö emphasizes that language models are emerging technology that will improve. over time and will be integrated into many tools that are already in use.

"If we now ban the use of language models through ChatGPT, do we also ban the use of Google search or Word spellcheck, when they start to provide results and corrections using the same technology? Language models are already in use in the work life and therefore it is important that student learn to use them right. Banning them would be short-sighted”.
