ILE visits Buenos Aires for a Mini Symposium on STEAM education

In February 2024, our Innovative Learning Environments research team (ILE) made a multi-project visit to South-America, visiting various universities and schools in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. On 27th February, our team presented a Mini Symposium about STEAM education, organized at the INSPT UTN Institute for Future Teachers and the research group INTECEN UTN Avellaneda in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For this innovative hybrid event, we were fortunate to be in touch with Dra. María Cristina Kanobel, who, along with colleagues from the Instituto Nacional Superior del Profesorado Técnico helped the visitors from Europe (Finland, Austria) host this mini-symposium with Zsolt Lavicza, a professor in STEAM Education Research Methods, from JKU Linz School of Education, Matias Mäki-Kuutti and Orsolya Tuba, project researchers from the JYU, and of course our very own Kristóf Fenyvesi, joining to speak online all the way from a cabin in Lapland, Finland, temporarily halting his winter holidays for the event!

First, Dr. Prof. Zsolt Lavicza talked about STEAM education innovation research and 3D-printing, creativity, transdisciplinary education, as well as use of VR, and AR technologies in education. Secondly, Dr. Kristof Fenyvesi introduced our ongoing TFK-funded projects FinnUruSteam and MultiLED projects in Uruguay, projects dealing with school environments and social-emotional learning environment frameworks, holistic pedagogical practices from Finland that span across the entire formal and informal learning journey of children. We then continued to introduce the Finnish educational system, along with some interesting facts about the Finnish society and its culture.

This multilingual event was made possible by Dra. María Cristina Kanobel helping translate the English-speakers’ presentations into Spanish, along with occasional translation help from our JYU team’s Matias Mäki-Kuutti. The symposium was moderated by: Dra. Thank you!

This was a fantastic opportunity for us to share knowledge about our ongoing projects! After-event discussions led to ideas and opportunities for project cooperations and other means of research collaboration with our research and education friends overseas! This event was invaluable for exploring international collaboration, and mutual learning towards finding local solutions to global problems. We will be back for sure!
