Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ PhD student Giovanni Misitano was one of five contestants who were chosen based on their pre-selection submissions to compete in the Millennium Graduate Student Contest final, organized by the Technology Academy Finland (TAF).

In the final of the contest, each PhD student had three minutes to pitch an innovative technological solution to a problem faced by modern society.

Misitano’s pitch received a 5,000€ special grant awarded by the Nokia Foundation for the best pitch related to information and communication technology or telecommunications. Sanaz Zarabi, Aalto University PhD student, won first prize.

– I entered the contest with the idea of convincing the audience of the importance of my research. I didn’t want to put too much emphasis on commercialisation, even though that was one of the judging criteria. I’m very pleased that my message got through and that I convinced the jury of the importance of my research. The visibility that my success in the contest brings to my research, our research group and our university is worth more than money, Misitano rejoices.

Misitano’s pitch was about developing tools for explainable multiobjective optimization. Misitano works at the Information Technology Faculty’s Multiobjective Optimization research group, which aims to create open source software tools that will help in making better and more informed decisions in a world of conflicting objectives.

Congratulations Giovanni!

The contest recording can be viewed on until 25 November 2022.
