Four top scientists from the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ chosen as new members of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters
First Professor of Software Engineering at the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters
Professor of Information Systems Science Pekka Abrahamsson is widely recognized for his academic achievements. Abrahamsson is a pioneer in the field of research on software engineering methods and processes. He has created collaborations between industry and academia both in Finland and abroad. Abrahamsson is the most cited researcher in his field in Finland.
Abrahamsson is ranked in the 13th place among all-time Finnish scientist in the field of computer science and electronics. Arnetminer named him among the 100 most influential software engineering scientists in the world in 2016. Abrahamsson was awarded the Nokia Foundation Award 2007. In the same year, his large international European research project was also awarded with the prestigious ITEA-Achievement Award.
Youngest External Member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters
Professor Nikolay V. Kuznetsov is the Head of Applied Cybernetics Department in St. Petersburg University and Visiting Professor at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. His research group has the status of the Russian Center of Excellence in the field of mathematics and mechanics for 2014–2021 and collaborates with main Russian academic institutes and universities. In Finland, he co-chairs the Finnish-Russian Educational-Research program, organized in 2007. His very productive international research collaboration among globally well-known scientists is wide and includes close connections to Finland.
His research interests are in dynamical systems and applied mathematics. In his works, rigorous analytical and reliable numerical methods allow both the advancement in solving many previously known fundamental problems as well as the development of modern technologies. Kuznetsov’s group’s results have been fundamentally groundbreaking for the field and have been recognized worldwide. He has been invited to deliver over twenty plenary lectures at international conferences.
Economical and Efficient Catalytic Materials for Industry and Consumers
Karoliina Honkala is Professor of Chemistry at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Her research focuses on computational catalysis. Honkala has published about 80 of peer-reviewed scientific articles including several papers in high impact journals. She has focused on studying how different factors influence the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions using state-of the art computational methods. Obtained atomic-level information can be used to understand and develop more economical and efficient catalytic materials for industry and consumers, and tackle the challenges related to climate change.
To support her research Karoliina Honkala has received a number of significant funding from the Academy of Finland between years 2017-2023, which allow her to investigate e.g., thermocatalytic and electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived molecules to value added species and explore carbon dioxide conversion to fuel components.
Since 2005, Honkala has worked at Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, first as an academy postdoctoral fellow and academy research fellow and then as a university researcher and associate professor. She was appointed professor in 2017. She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Technical University of Denmark in 2002-2004. She is currently a vice head of department of chemistry.
Karoliina Honkala is a representative of Finland at the European Federation of Catalysis Council, a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of Surface Science journal and the board member of the Surface and Interfaces Section of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society. Honkala got the Berzelius Prize of the Nordic Catalysis Society in 2015.
Rewarded Professor Focuses on Inverse Problems in Differential Equations and Geometry
Mikko Salo has held the position of Professor of Mathematics at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ since 2013. Salo started studying mathematics at the University of Oulu and received his PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Helsinki in 2004. He has been working as an Academy Research Fellow at the universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä. Salo is a Docent in applied mathematics at the universities of Helsinki and Oulu.
In his research Mikko Salo focuses on inverse problems in differential equations and geometry, and their applications in tomography and wave motion. He has also studied the stability of solutions. He has published 90 scientific studies, including more than 60 in high level peer-reviewed scientific journals. Salo has visited several research institutes in the United States and Europe.
Mikko Salo has received Academy of Finland Award for Scientific Courage (2011), the Calderón Prize of the Inverse Problems International Association (2013) and the Väisälä Prize of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (2014). He was an Academy Research Fellow funded by the Academy of Finland from 2008 to 2013 and since 2012 has been a member of a research group that is part of the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging. He received an ERC Starting Grant for 2012-2017 and an ERC Consolidator Grant funding for 2018-2023.
