Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences stays near the top in ShanghaiRanking

The ranking of the JYU faculty declined slightly from the positions reached in the past couple of years. This year, for example, the number of references received greater weight than earlier.
“The ranking scores are calculated in proportion to the best unit in each category, and therefore the figures are not directly comparable across different years,” says Neil Cronin, the vice dean responsible for research. “It may be that our performance declined a bit during the evaluation period (2017–2021) or our competitors improved their performance, or it is a combination of these. Also the pandemic may have had an impact of some kind.”
Until this year, the faculty’s ranking on the Shanghai list has followed an upward trend. ShanghaiRanking published its world university list for sports-related units for the first time in 2016, when the faculty’s ranking was 40. In 2017, the ranking had risen to 36, and in 2018 further to 29. In 2019, the list was not published, but in 2020 the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences shared the ninth position and in 2021 reached its highest ranking as the eighth on the list.
The order of top 300 universities is based on the number of scientific publications and references as well as articles in the most prestigious international publications. The publication data were collected from the Web of Science database for a five-year period. This year’s top 300 list includes 285 universities with a sports-related unit, and 15 universities focused solely on sport sciences.
