Emmi Kirjanen received an award for her Master’s thesis on nanophysics

Academic Association for Mathematics and Natural Sciences – MAL awarded M.Sc Emmi Kirjanen for the best Master’s thesis of the year. Kirjanen did her work at The Nanoscience Center at the Ģֱ. The prize is 5 000 euros and it will be awarded on Thursday 28th of November 2019.

In her Master's thesis Emmi Kirjanen succesfully deposited metallic wiring and tunnel junctions on the surface of phononic crystals despite its highly uneven surface. With electrical measurements below 1 K temperatures she confirmed that the junctions were tunnel junctions, which also worked as nanoscale thermometers.

Kirjanen’s thesis was supervized by Professor Ilari Maasilta. The study has novelty value in research:

“Emmi's work gives an excellent foundation for the future studies to control thermal conduction with three dimensional structures, which can be easily self-assembled on different substrates, allowing wider applications”, Maasilta says.

Emmi Kirjanen works as a physicist in the Central Finland Health Care Distirict.
