Avalanche of applications for JYU-coordinated and EU-funded ASTRA project

A large number of applicants across the globe are interested in the ASTRA project (Applying Sustainability Transition Research in Social Work tackling Major Societal Challenge of Social Inclusion). The just ended application period for the related doctoral degree programme yielded altogether 178 applications from different parts of the world.

For this project coordinated by Professor Aila-Leena Matthies, altogether 15 young doctoral students will be recruited aiming to an international researcher career. According to the rules of the EU Commission’s Horizon2020 programme, nobody can apply for these positions in their own country of residence.

Research training includes also otherwise plenty of researcher mobility and international networking.In the ASTRA project, the research, policies and practices of transdisciplinary sustainable transition are applied to social work. These approaches include nature-based well-being, environmental justice, circular and solidarity economy, sustainable food policy of local communities, ecosocial innovations, and contributive justice. The core research question is how these approaches can increase opportunities for social inclusion especially of young people in precarious situations, people with an immigrant background, and vulnerable local communities.

The overall budget of the project is 3.96 million euros. From this sum, the share of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is 842,000 euros. The doctoral education network involves seven universities, two research institutes, and seven NGOs or companies. The consortium operates in seven EU countries.
