Antti Rautiainen’s professorship pertains to the subject of accounting without any specific focus area.

“This suit me well, because I like a wide range of research methods and topics and I always get interested in new initiatives and cooperation projects,” Rautiainen says. “Methodological diversity also supports the supervision of theses on different themes.”

Rautiainen’s research agenda currently includes a variety of themes that relate to, for example, changes in the job descriptions of accounting professionals because of digitalization. Other themes deal with, among others, trust in accounting system information, the future prospects of internal auditing, risk management, and auditors’ views on alternative financial statement information.

According to Rautiainen, the emerging future trends of research in accounting include questions related to digitalization, responsibility and currently also crises.

“Within these theme areas, academic research and education in accounting systems can help to respond to current challenges and trends,” he says. “This is very important because then research and teaching have also practical relevance.”

A developer of the working and alumni community

Rautiainen’s job title will change from Associate Professor to Professor from 1 October 2022. He thinks that this will not have a great immediate effect on his practical work and teaching.

“Probably the change will be quite small during this autumn. In fact, my job description may be influenced more by the personnel situation and the needs of teaching, research and administration within the discipline as well as the development of the field in general.

Antti Rautiainen has worked at JSBE as an associate professor in accounting (tenure track) since 2017. He is a docent of the University of Tampere as well as the country representative of Finland in the board of European Accounting Association.

His career encompasses plenty of publications, teaching and research, but instead of individual papers, Rautiainen wishes to highlight different type of merits from his CV.

“I started at JYU as an intern of internal audit in summer 1998, then got a teaching job in accounting in 1999 and, after many phases, I ended up to the professorship,” he says and continues:

“I have been lucky to have a chance to collaborate with so many colleagues both in Finland and abroad, and also to participate in various committees. This way I have been able to contribute to, among others, alumni work and the development of JSBE and the field. The working community has also been an important thing to me through sports and music activities.”
