Six participants were selected for the FORTHEM Researchers' Grand Prix semi-final from among JYU's young researchers. They were asked to prepare a 4-minute pitch of their research project. With the help of experts in coaching sessions, the researchers had the opportunity to practice presenting their research in front of a live audience. In the semi-final, the researchers' performances were judged by a jury who evaluated how engaging and interesting the presentation of the research topic was, and the scientific and societal value of the research itself.

Innovative Research Topics Presented in the Semifinal

The six researchers got to present the pitch they had practiced at the semifinals during the JYU Business Networking Day. The presentations were in two sessions, and the jury gave some feedback after each pitch. The jury consisted of Research and Innovation Services Senior Advisor Timo Taskinen (JYU), Director of Business, Workforce, and Competence Pirkko Melville (ELY), Business Coach Mika Fisk (Startup Factory) Vice Rector Pasi 鲹쾱Գä쾱 (JYU), Ecosystem for Business and Innovation Program Manager Nina Rautiainen (City of Jyväskylä), and FORTHEM alliance Project Manager Sanna Väisänen (FORTHEM, JYU).

The researchers showcased their respective research topics in an engaging manner with the help of visual means. The winners of the semifinal were Alina Arti with the pitch entitled “Corporate Misinformation: Navigating Risks in a Complex World” and Mari Koistinen with the pitch entitled “Sing and Get Healthy!”. The jury noted that Arti and Koistinen’s research showed huge potential in two very important and influential areas of research, and that they presented their research in a clear, engaging, and inspiring way. Following the semi-final, they are now offered the possibility to participate in the international Grand Prix final in Kristiansand, Norway.

Alina Arti is a doctoral researcher at Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics. She is researching misinformation in the corporate realm aiming to understand its impact on society and provide solutions to its threats. Alina said after the event, “Participating in the Grand Prix last week was an incredible experience, as it highlighted the impressive range of research being done by my colleagues at the Ģֱ. I'm looking forward to the final in Norway, and feel honoured to represent Finland and our university on an international stage”

Mari Koistinen is from the Doctoral Programme of the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies. Her research is about teaching singing in a group context and about well-being. She designed an intervention where she combines the fundamentals of singing which at the same time are the fundamentals of well-being. Mari commented,  The FORTHEM Grand Prix semifinal in Jyväskylä was an educational experience and good chance to hear about what kind of research young, beginning researchers are doing at the JYU. It was interesting not only to hear about the research but also to see what kind of presentations the other doctoral students had made. I wish there would be more opportunities like this at the JYU. We usually see only presentations from our own field, but to listen to a bit strange topics from other research fields, gives you ideas, how to mould your own presentations so that they will meet the audience. I am happy & proud to have a chance to go to Norway and represent our university. What an experience it will be.”
