"I am interested in human phenomena and my approach to generating new knowledge is computational, which means that I bend multimodal data, algorithms and computing power to research needs," says Heilala.

His main research interests are learning and wellbeing. "My broader goal as a researcher and teacher is to find ways to use technology to promote the best in people," Heilala concludes.

At the Ģֱ, Heilala is inspired by the interdisciplinary research community, colleagues and the beautiful campus: "I greatly value interdisciplinary thinking". He says that research and teaching are currently combined in an inspiring way by supervising doctoral researchers.

Heilala has worked at the Ģֱ, Faculty of Education and Psychology, as a postdoctoral researcher in the fields of learning analytics, artificial intelligence in education and future perspectives of technology. Heilala has completed his PhD in Computer Science at the Faculty of Information Technology in 2022 with a thesis on the analysis of student agency using computational psychometrics. He also holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Music. Before his research career, Heilala worked for over a decade as a teacher in Finnish primary education.
