4.2.2021: Professional roles of Russophone journalists in Estonia reconsidered (Jufereva-Skuratovski) ONLINE EVENT

“This thesis aims to analyze the main changes in the perception of professional roles and ethical values of Russophone journalists in Estonia that occurred during the process of societal and political transformation in Estonia from 1991 to 2016. This study also considers societal integration in Estonia and the impact of Russophone journalists on the process”, Jufereva-Skuratovski explained.
Jufereva-Skuratovski argues that Russophone journalists in Estonia were expected to mediate in the process of societal integration in order to act like a bridge between the two communities.
There were two central questions for the study to answer. First, what changes in Russophone journalists’ perceptions of their professional roles and in their professional ethical values occurred during the process of societal and political transformation in Estonia from 1991 to 2016? And second, how did Russophone journalists see their roles and tasks concerning societal integration in Estonia?
The thesis maintains that Russophone journalists who worked at the beginning of the 2000s saw their roles as contradictory. On one hand they realised the importance of their mission in society to assist Russophone minorities to integrate into Estonian society, while on the other they had no power to influence political processes and agenda. Many Russophone journalists adopted the “loyal-facilitator” role which led to an inner conflict resulting in some of them changing profession in favour of politics so they could better defend the interests of the Russophone minority.
Main supervisor of the thesis is Professor Emerita Epp Lauk.
