Where in Finland can one catch a glimpse of (or hug) a Moomin? What stories can one uncover about the life of Tove Jansson when strolling around Helsinki? What meanings do readers attribute to Jansson’s works and what do the sites with ties to her signify to them?

In her dissertation, YTM Evgenia Amey studies how places with connections to Tove Jansson and her literary works are experienced by readers who are not native Finns, including visitors and residents. What do they seek, when coming to Finland in pursuit of the Moomins? What memories and associations do the characters evoke? How does a foreign-born citizen feel when visiting familiar sites in Helsinki, which turn out to have connections to the known writer and artist?

For every reader it is a unique journey, entangled with childhood memories, tied to personal experiences, shaped by contemporary interpretations, guided by newly discovered information, or, perhaps, supplemented with merchandize.

The significance of sites associated with Jansson for different readers is affected by both individual and collective factors. Prior engagement with and personal importance of her work play crucial roles; furthermore, meanings attributed to places are constantly (re)negotiated, reflecting changing interpretations of the texts and the author’s biography. Finland can also be imagined as a fairytale land, home of the Moomins.
