18.4.2019 M.sc. Evgeny Bulatov: The wealth of coordination chemistry of platinum(II) is systematized and enriched

Platinum is known as a noble metal due to its rarity and chemical inertness. This, however, is not true for coordination compounds of platinum(II). Their broad and diverse chemistry has provided many milestone discoveries in the history of coordination chemistry and made significant contributions to the modern fields of anticancer treatment, transition metal catalysis in organic synthesis, and organic light emitting devices.
In order to further develop the coordination chemistry of platinum(II), a rational approach to classification of its chemistry is required. Platinum(II) complexes can participate in chemical interactions of different strength and location. In terms of location, the interactions can be divided into those involving only ligands or only the metal center. In terms of strength, weak non-covalent and strong covalent interactions can be separated, thus affording four separate fields of chemical interactions. In his dissertation, Evgeny Bulatov has summarized relevant literature and provided new contributions to each of the four fields.
The studies presented in the dissertation range from “wet” synthetic chemistry to theoretical computational studies, and the obtained results are valuable for both applied and fundamental chemistry. Particularly, the developed synthetic methods are applicable in synthesis of drugs and functional materials, whereas the theoretical results provide new aspects to the knowledge of chemical non-covalent bonding.
Evgeny Bulatov was born in 1991 in Archangelsk, Russia. He received B.Sc. degree in organic chemistry at Saint Petersburg State University, Russia in 2012. After that Evgeny moved to Jyväskylä, Finland, where in 2014 he received double M.Sc. degree in organic chemistry at Saint Petersburg State University and in inorganic and analytical chemistry at the Ģֱ.
